Tosca is one of Giacomo Puccini's finest operas and features some of his most touching and tragic arias.
Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa based their libretto for Tosca on Victorien Sardou's play, La Tosca. A romantic tragedy, Tosca explores the darker side of human emotion. It is set in 1800 in Rome. Napoleon has just invaded Italy and the Queen of Naples has installed the corrupt Baron Scarpia as chief of police.
When Angelotti, a republican revolutionary escapes from prison and seeks refuge with the painter Cavaradossi.
Cavaradossi's lover, the opera singer Floria Tosca, finds herself caught in the middle of the political storm when police chief Scarpia tries to use her to get at Cavaradossi, and ultimately Angelotti.
One of the most beautiful operas of the 19th century, Tosca features the moving arias “Recondite Armonia”, “Vissi d'Arte” and “E Lucevan Le Stelle”.
